Thing 23

How could you draw on what you have learned in 23 Things to help you in your work?

I now have some knowledge, albeit rudimentary, of a number of technologies that I had never even heard of before. Some of the tools, like Delicious and the Google products are creating efficiences in my daily work practices. Perhaps even more importantly, I feel that I have a bit more of an understanding of some of the implications of Web 2.0 for libraries.

How could the library use the technologies featured in 23 Things to improve its service?

The Library Thing product is a good enhancement. I can see potential of Youtube for library promotion and education, and of RSS feeds.

Do you think you’ll keep blogging or keep using any of the other tools you learned about?

Will probably not keep blogging, but I may do at some future time, and can see potential. Will definitely keep using Delicious and will explore Flickr and RSS feeds more at some stage.

Were there any take-aways or unexpected outcomes from this program that surprised you?

The big surprise for me was that I have actually enjoyed most of the program!

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept?

Can't really see any need for improvement.

If we offered another discovery program like this in the future, would you again choose to participate?

The program was excellent, congratulations Jason, and thanks Adrian for making us do it! I found the self-paced nature of the program great, as I started on it very late, but was still able to complete it. The fact that everyone was doing the program at roughly the same time led to some great collaborative work, and has been a good team-building exercise. I would definitely be keen to do more programs like this.

Thing 22

Have only had time so far to dip into the material relating to Web and Library 2.0 respectively. My attention was immediately caught by the stated Library 2.0 principle that 'Libraries embrace radical trust'. No doubt because 'part of the appeal of the term ‘radical trust’ is its quasi-moralistic/spiritual/revolutionary tone'! (Chan, 2006). Have started doing some reading about this, and moved through a reaction of distaste when I found the application of the concept in a marketing context to remaining interested in how this idea applies to how we manage library collections. Will continue reading in this area.

Thing 21

IGoogle is one of my favourites - I especially like my Random Cat of the Day gadget!

Things 18, 19 and 20

I like Google maps, have been using this for a while. Google docs has lots of potential - did some work with Lyn on the Berwick rosters using this tool. Google books also a useful tool for collection development.

Flickr is a great resource. Have set up a Fickr account, and posted this photo with public access, and chislib tag. Also a link to the following beautiful slideshow of someone else's photos.

Delicious is a good tool, and will be helpful to me as I work on different computers, and so can access bookmarks from anywhere. The social aspect is interesting.

Well, I think Library Thing is a great thing! One of my favourites so far. I'm sure I'll spend more time on this one when I get an opportunity. Here is my library so far.........

Thing 11

Well, I must say that after a somewhat stressful day it's been therapeutic to play with image generators for a while tonight.

Things 8, 9, and 10

Podcasts and vodcasts probably not really my thing. Also found it frustrating that lots of sites were blocked by Chisholm as 'streaming'. Enjoyed adding to the library wiki, although I found it hard to remove something once it was up.

Things 1-7

The video on search plugins was very well done, and I now have new knowledge about these, although I don't think I'll actually use this much at the moment. RSS feeds information useful. Enjoyed setting up the blog, and looking at everyone else's - I can see that this is a way for people to express their creativity.
